Crop MonitoringInside Mills Facilitator

Better or worse than a season ago? Doing well right now?

Zaraat Dost's own satellite crop-health service answers both questions for any circle, per mauza and per parcel, with the verdict first and the measurements one press away. When cloud cover makes a verdict unsafe, it says so.

Two questions, two answers

Relative to last year, and absolute.

Question one

Is this crop doing better or worse than the same ground a season ago?

Season-to-date canopy for the same parcel, against last year and against the territory as a whole. The verdicts are On track, Slipping and Behind, each with the numbers behind it, and an honest refusal when clouds or too few clear views make a verdict unsafe.

Question two

Is it doing well right now, in absolute terms?

Every parcel is also held against what healthy cane in this circle normally shows by this fortnight. A poor field that was equally poor last year is no longer called on track.

Zone maps

Inside each mauza, the ground coloured by what matters.

Colours are read only off surveyed cane parcels, and a legend is always present. Nothing rides on colour alone.

Canopy shortfall

How far the parcel sits below what is normal for this circle by this fortnight.

  • At or above normal
  • Slightly below
  • 10 to 28% short
  • 28 to 40% short
  • More than 40% short

Change on last year

Season-to-date canopy against the same ground a season ago.

  • Better than last year
  • About the same
  • Slipping
  • Behind

Moisture

How wet or dry the canopy is, parcel by parcel.

  • Wet canopy
  • Moderate
  • Dry

Gaps

Bare or thin patches inside a parcel that was surveyed as cane.

  • Closed canopy
  • Thin
  • Gap

Clear views

How many cloud-free looks the satellite had. Too few, and there is no verdict.

  • 11+ clear views
  • 5 to 10
  • Fewer than 5, no verdict

What it will not do

Precision it does not have, it does not claim.

  • It never colours built-up ground: houses, roads and canals are masked out so they cannot read as poor crop.
  • It looks only at surveyed cane parcels, so every colour on the map belongs to a real field with a real grower.
  • It refuses a verdict when cloud cover or too few clear views make one unsafe.
  • It keeps the measurements one press away, so a verdict can always be checked.
